Education and Outreach

As part of our NSF CAREER grant, we collaborated with Galactic Polymath Education Studio to create lesson plans for high school biology students highlighting our research and teaching about trade-offs in biology, sound visualization and analysis, graphing and data analysis. The lessons are great and feature videos of our crew in action, check it out!

Balancing Act

Tradeoffs in frogs, humans, and other animals

Dr. Michael Reichert's Lab studies the evolution of behaviors, in particular frog communication, and metabolism. logo

Students will follow in the soggy footsteps of scientists wading through ponds at night to record frogs as they learn about biological tradeoffs that connect humans to horses to frogs. Along the way, they'll decide which male a female frog should choose as a mate, based on analysis of call performance.

Soundlab sound analysis software

Also in collaboration with Galactic Polymath, along with Victor Minces and Matthew Rice, we developed Soundlab, a free web-based spectrogram visualizer and sound analysis software, the first of its kind! This is ideal for educational settings because it is web based, and it features customizable spectrograms, automated sound detection, graphing capabilities and more! We incorporated Soundlab into one of the lessons in Balancing Act.
